is an APRSTM GPS position encoder which, when connected to a serial GPS and a radio, will transmit its location at an adjustable rate.
TinyTrak3Plus is the fourth generation in TinyTrak series, and is available as a kit construction project, or as a built and tested unit, providing an inexpensive way to build a
mobile tracker without the need for a full TNC.
It is configured by connecting to a computer's serial port, and running a
simple configuration tool which allows setting of all user options. After that, the computer can be disconnected, and a GPS connected in its place for operation.
TinyTrak3Plus has the following features:
- Decodes any NMEA-0183 compatible serial GPS sending $GPRMC or $GPGGA sentences. USB only GPSs will not work.
- Can provide 5V power to an external GPS (such as the Byonics GPS1 or GPS2).
- Transmits position, altitude, speed, heading, and timestamp (hour/minute/seconds or day/hour/minute).
- Supports SmartBeaconing, which adjusts transmission rates to speed and turning.
- Can transmit position in MIC-E, NMEA, or APRS ASCII text format.
- Two configurations, with all user options switchable.
- Burst after voice / Send Position Now input.
- Handles position resolution down to 7 inches.
Also consider: TinyTrak SMT, the surface mount version of TinyTrak3, and
TinyTrak4, with the ability to encode and decode packets.

TinyTrak3Plus Built and GPS2 Combo
GPS WARNING: The Byonics GPS2 above is a 5 volt GPS receiver. Do not connect directly to 12 volts or it will be destroyed.
If buying with a TinyTrak3Plus kit, configure J7 for 5 volts (the bottom two square pads soldered together).
If buying with a TinyTrak3Plus built and tested, this will already be done for you. Do not use these GPS receivers directly with the older TinyTrak3 (non-Plus version).
RF Related Resets:
If you see the TinyTrak3 yellow and green LEDs flash 3 times together, followed by a quick flash of the red PTT LED, and then it repeats, this is usually a sign of the TinyTrak3 resetting due to too much local RF energy.
Solutions to this problem are lower RF power, moving the antenna further away, and/or toroid clmap filters on the cables leading to the TT3. One other possible cause is a low battery, or a short in the radio cable.
Radio and Power Cables available for many common radios. Click
TT USB Cable - $20.
This USB cable will connect a TinyTrak3Plus or TinyTrak4 to a computer USB port for configuring.
In addition, if the TinyTrak is set for 5V on J7 (TT3+) or JP6 (TT4) to power a GPS2, this cable will also power the TinyTrak from the computer.
It is a USB A to DB-9 female, and is basically a USB to serial adapter plus a F-F null modem cable,
with the bonus of providing 5V to power the TinyTrak via pin 4.
Drivers can be found HERE. Not compatible with Windows 8.
A Gender Changer and a Null Modem Adapter, or the TT USB cable above, is needed to connect a TinyTrak3Plus to the computer for configuration.
TinyTrak3 Chip - $18.
This is a replacement TinyTrak3/TinyTrak3Plus chip. Also, with this chip, a TinyTrakII can be upgraded to all the functionality of a TinyTrak3.
