Byonics TinyTrak3+
TinyTrak3Plus
is an APRSTM GPS position encoder which, when connected to a serial GPS and a radio, will transmit its location at an adjustable rate.
TinyTrak3Plus is the fourth generation in TinyTrak series, and is available as a kit construction project, or as a built and tested unit, providing an inexpensive way to build a
mobile tracker without the need for a full TNC.
It is configured by connecting to a computer's serial port, and running a
simple configuration tool which allows setting of all user options. After that, the computer can be disconnected, and a GPS connected in its place for operation.
TinyTrak3Plus has the following features:
- Decodes any NMEA-0183 compatible serial GPS sending $GPRMC or $GPGGA sentences. USB only GPSs will not work.
- Can provide 5V power to an external GPS (such as the Byonics GPS1 or GPS2).
- Transmits position, altitude, speed, heading, and timestamp (hour/minute/seconds or day/hour/minute).
- Supports SmartBeaconing, which adjusts transmission rates to speed and turning.
- Can transmit position in MIC-E, NMEA, or APRS ASCII text format.
- Two configurations, with all user options switchable.
- Burst after voice / Send Position Now input.
- Handles position resolution down to 7 inches.
Also consider: TinyTrak SMT, the surface mount version of TinyTrak3, and
TinyTrak4, with the ability to encode and decode packets.
TinyTrak3Plus User's Manual and Windows Configuration Software is available.

GPS WARNING: The Byonics GPS2 above is a 5 volt GPS receiver. Do not connect directly to 12 volts or it will be destroyed.
If buying with a TinyTrak3Plus kit, configure J7 for 5 volts (the bottom two square pads soldered together).
If buying with a TinyTrak3Plus built and tested, this will already be done for you. Do not use these GPS receivers directly with the older TinyTrak3 (non-Plus version).
RF Related Resets:
If you see the TinyTrak3 yellow and green LEDs flash 3 times together, followed by a quick flash of the red PTT LED, and then it repeats, this is usually a sign of the TinyTrak3 resetting due to too much local RF energy.
Solutions to this problem are lower RF power, moving the antenna further away, and/or toroid clmap filters on the cables leading to the TT3. One other possible cause is a low battery, or a short in the radio cable.

TT USB Cable - $20.
This USB cable will connect a TinyTrak3Plus or TinyTrak4 to a computer USB port for configuring.
In addition, if the TinyTrak is set for 5V on J7 (TT3+) or JP6 (TT4) to power a GPS2, this cable will also power the TinyTrak from the computer.
It is a USB A to DB-9 female, and is basically a USB to serial adapter plus a F-F null modem cable,
with the bonus of providing 5V to power the TinyTrak via pin 4.
Drivers can be found HERE. Not compatible with Windows 8.
A Gender Changer and a Null Modem Adapter, or the TT USB cable above, is needed to connect a TinyTrak3Plus to the computer for configuration.
TinyTrak3 Chip - $18.
This is a replacement TinyTrak3/TinyTrak3Plus chip. Also, with this chip, a TinyTrakII can be upgraded to all the functionality of a TinyTrak3.

FAQ:
- What adjustments can I make to my serial port to improve or repair communications?
- Do you have configuration software for the Mac?
- What are all the pieces I will need to make a complete TinyTrak APRS tracker?
- What settings do you recommend for the TinyTraks or Micro-Traks?
- How can I receive and display the APRS transmissions from the TinyTraks and Micro-Traks?
- How can I correct a TinyTrak3 that is transmitting every 1-2 seconds?
- If you notice the yellow and green LEDs flash 3 times together, then the red PTT LED lights, and then it repeats, that means the TinyTrak3 is resetting when it tries to transmit. The 2 most common causes for this are low battery, or more commonly, too much local RF getting into the TinyTrak3 or cables. The recommended solutions to the RF interference are to run lower power or to use a remote or better antenna. Some users have also had success with placing the TinyTrak in a metal box, adding toroid clamp filters to the cables, and adding additional capacitors to the I/O pads.
If the problem persists even when no radio is connected, the unit may be configured to transmit every second, which is more often than recommmended. You may have to turn R6 to the extreme to fool the CD logic to stop transmitting, and then you can run the configuration program.
